Call it the rise of the millennial generation, the increasing recognition of women in design, our craving for optimism wherever we can find it, or the full bloom of rose (and rosé) shades on social media: Pink rooms are here to stay. And VERANDA editors are taking them in stride.

In fact, we've been passionate about pink since our inception in 1987. That time period was in many ways a renaissance for the rosy hue. Thanks to pop culture's influence of movies like Pretty in Pink and Steel Magnolias and television shows like Designing Women and Miami Vice , pink decor and fashion (even for men!) truly made their way into the mainstream.

Three decades later and the pretty color is back and bigger than ever. It was selected by Pantone as its color of the year in 2016 and by Benjamin Moore as its 2020 color of the year—and the rosy shade has been popping up at many of our most favorite travel destinations around the world. It should come as no surprise that pink is so beloved: after all, the color feels right at home in so many gorgeous gardens, making decorating with it a natural way to bring the beauty of the outdoors in. This may explain why pink has long been a preferred pick by British designers, from Sybil Colefax and John Fowler to Veere Greeney and Ben Pentreath, for English country homes.

If the color's recent accolades prove anything, it's the power of pink to exhibit strength as much as beauty. In fact, as our color preferences have been shifting to favor warmer paint colors and cozy neutral shades, we're starting to favor earthier pinks, like terra cotta, peach, and even salmon.
